Brian Schatz, the 47-year-old senior U.S. Senator for Hawaii, was appointed to the post in 2012 by the state’s governor following the death of Sen. Daniel Inouye. In 2014, he won a special election to fill the remainder of Inouye’s term; two years later he was reelected to the Senate for a full term. Previously, Schatz served in the Hawaii House of Representatives and was the state’s lieutenant governor.
Quotes: “It’s easy for us to look at another country or another political party and say, ‘Enough! Do better!’ It is a tougher conversation when the problem is in our own tent.” | “Hawaii feels so passionately about climate. You know, our oceans are warming. As a result, we have more ocean acidification and coral bleaching. You can actually see it.”
