Benjamin “Ben” Cardin (77), who serves as the senior United States Senator from Maryland, was first elected to that seat in 2006. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously was the U.S. Representative for Maryland’s 3rd congressional district. Before that, Cardin served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and as Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates. In his half-century career as an elected official, he has never lost an election.
Quote: “Since my election to Congress, I’ve always been interested in human rights. I really do believe that’s America’s strength. Yes, we have a strong military; yes, we have a strong economy. But what really makes America the unique nation it is, is that we speak up about human rights, and anti-corruption, and good governance, and democratic institutions. That’s what America is known for. That’s what inspires people around the world with U.S. leadership.”
