Barnett Newman (Jan. 29, 1905 — July 4, 1970) was a major abstract expressionist and color-field painter. His artwork is on display in many museums, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (New York City), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), the Museum of Modern Art (New York City), and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles).
Quotes: “I hope that my painting has the impact of giving someone, as it did me, the feeling of his own totality, of his own separateness, of his own individuality.” | “What is the explanation of the seemingly insane drive of man to be painter and poet if it is not an act of defiance against man’s fall and an assertion that he return to the Garden of Eden? For the artists are the first men.”
