Avril Haines (52) became the U.S. Director of National Intelligence (DNI) the day after Joe Biden was sworn in as President. She is the first woman to fulfill that role. Previously, she served as Assistant to the President and Principal Deputy National Security Advisor during the Obama Administration from 2015-2017, during which time she led the National Security Council’s Deputies Committee. From 2013-2015, Haines was the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Quotes: “The challenge is in clearly articulating, I think, both to the American people and to others, ‘Here’s what we’re doing and here’s what we’re not doing, and this is what we think makes sense, and here’s why.’ ” | “The DNI must never shy away from speaking truth to power — even, especially, when doing so may be inconvenient or difficult, the DNI must insist that, when it comes to intelligence, there is simply no place for politics — ever.”
