Angela Warnick Buchdahl (48) is an Asian-American rabbi and cantor. She was born in Korea to a Japanese mother and a Jewish-American father. Buchdahl is the chief rabbi of New York City’s Central Synagogue, a large and prominent Reform congregation. In the powerful and highly personal sermon linked below, delivered on Yom Kippur 2020, she makes a strong case that Jews are not a “race” and need to be more inclusive of non-White members of the Jewish family.
Quote: “For Buchdahl, key Jewish values include ‘a spirit of genuine inquiry and multiple opinions; our whole method of study and nondogmatic spirit; the dignity of every person and the fact that we are all created in the image of God; the ability to know what it is to be a stranger and to have been a slave — and to force ourselves to embody that understanding in every generation.’ ” — Hadassah Magazine
