Abby Stein, 27, is a transgender woman who, before transitioning and coming out, was an ultra-Orthodox rabbi. Born and raised in a New York Hassidic community, she was rejected by her family and community because of her changed gender status. Since then, Stein has become a noted public speaker, author, and blogger advocating for transgender rights. She also founded a support group for other Orthodox transgender people.
Quote: “To some extent, leaving the [Hasidic] community was even harder than transitioning. I had no idea what I was getting into. I didn’t know anyone, couldn’t speak the language, and didn’t have an education. I didn’t know how to dress. I didn’t know how to talk… The culture shock is just in every level, every way…. It’s like being an immigrant in your own country.”
