Flora Tsapovsky has been an immigrant twice in her life: first to Israel from Russia in 1991, when she was 8; and later to the U.S. from Israel in 2015, as an adult. In an essay published earlier this year in Tablet Magazine, she reflected on the two very different roles the Hebrew language has played in her life: one after she made Aliyah and had to learn the language to survive; the other after she came to America and taught Hebrew to young Jews. Even though she’s now a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle and other English-language publications, it seems her linguistic heart still belongs to Tel Aviv.
