Democrat Stephen Adler, 64, took over the office of mayor of Austin, Texas, in early 2015. One of his signature issues in that position has been homelessness, especially among veterans. Prior to entering politics, Adler practiced law in the Texas city for more than three decades, during which he focused on eminent domain and employment discrimination cases. As board chair of the Anti-Defamation League Austin Region for three years, he helped create the Austin Hate Crimes Task Force.
Quote: “[Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s] suggestion that people experiencing homelessness are criminals is not true, its kind of like saying all immigrants are rapists. Its harmful to a community where we demonize people like that.”
